Ten Club Recognizes 10 "Charter Members"June 08 2012
The Ten Club recognizes 10 "Charter Members". We've dug through the ancient scrolls of the Ten Club history books and identified who we think are 10 of the first (and still active) members of this club. We wanted to get to know these folks a little better and thought you might too.
One of these Charter Members will be selected to be hosted by the Ten Club in Amsterdam for the two PJ shows there this month. We'll be announcing the lucky member next week and sharing their adventure with you here on pearljam.com.
First Show: April 6th 1992 Cumnock Hall Umass Lowell, Lowell Mass
Total shows: 13 I only get to really go when the play the Boston area plus 1 Ed solo show
Favorite Live: All of them! but if I had to pick one April 11th 1994 the old Boston Garden the emotions of the band was evident on stage and in the songs.
Favorite Album: No Code
Favorite Lyric: When he was six he believed that the moon overhead followed him
By nine he had deciphered the illusion, trading magic for fact
So this is what it's like to be an adult
If he only knew now what he knew then
Favorite Album art: Self titled (Avocado)
Twelve words on how the band has inspired you: The Band to me has always been about Honesty, to oneself and others.
The first time you saw PJ: 1995 at Summerfest in Milwaukee Wisconsin. It was a fantastic outdoor show with the Buzzcocks and the Frogs opening. (i had tried to see them at Lollapolooza in 1992, but wasn't able to get tickets; this was the next time that Pearl Jam toured near Minnesota)
Total number of shows you've seen: 7 pearl jam shows; 2 solo Eddie Shows; 1 Brad show
Favorite live performance: So hard to pick a favorite live performance!! Of shows that I have seen, my favorite performance would have to be that 1st show at Summerfest in 1995. I knew it would be a good show, but didn't realize how good it would be -- I was completely blown away by how tight the performance was, and the energy and passion that went into every song. For the encore, Ed returned with a Neil Diamond impersonator who was at the festival and sang a verse of "Forever in Blue Jeans." A night I will never forget!
-- I have to mention my favorite concert moment was at the 2003 Saint Paul, MN show. Another fan threw a Paul Wellstone sticker up on stage [Wellstone was an incredibly passionate, progressive senator from Minnesota who was killed in a plane crash in the midst of a very tense re-election campaign against a soul-less bastard. I had worked with Wellstone in college and he is a personal hero of mine]. In the midst of the set, Jeff picked up the campaign sticker and put it on his bass. It always made me so happy at later shows to see the yellow bass still rocking that green Wellstone sticker.
Favorite album: I can honestly say that I love every single album - something I can't say about any other artist. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be TEN. I was in high school and one of my friends got a copy of the album from Pachyderm studios in Northfield MN (Pearl Jam wasn't on the radio in minnesota yet). I instantly fell in love with the music. This album came at a tough time in my life and the lyrics really spoke to me. It sounds strange but I can still remember how the paper smelled because I read and re-read the hand written lyrics in the inside cover so many times.
Favorite lyric: "I'm just a human being I will take the blame But just the same This is not me You see, Believe I'm better than this"
Favorite album art: Vitalogy -- I really liked the historic book / record concept.

Favorite album art: No Code
Twelve words on how the band has inspired you: I am inspired by the longevity of the band and all the good they do!
Kew Gardens, NY
The first time you saw PJ: August 9, 1992 at Jones Beach. It was almost April 12, 1992 (my birthday) at The Limelight but I couldn't convince any of my friends to go because we had never been to a club show up until this point. And I didn't want to go by myself.
Total number of shows you've seen: 27. Almost every tour.
Favorite live performance: December 31, 1992 at The Academy - my first Pearl Jam club show. August 18, 1993 is a close second. That was a great experience along with the fact that getting to this show with my friends was an experience in itself.
Favorite album: Ten. The impact it had on my life will be everlasting.
Favorite lyric: "There's no wrong or right,...but I'm sure there's good and bad...All the rusted signs we ignore throughout our lives...choosing the shiny ones instead"
Favorite album art: No Code.
Twelve words on how Pearl Jam has inspired you: The music of Pearl Jam is an emotional whirlwind. I embrace it all.
The first time you saw PJ: The first time I saw Pearl Jam was with my dad at the old Chicago Stadium on March 10, 1994.
Total number of shows you've seen: Ten (Seven of them with my dad)
Favorite live performance: Regal Theatre, March 13, 1994. My dad and I had gone to the Chicago Stadium show three nights before. The girls in front of us stood on their seats the whole time, so I couldn’t see the show. Dad decided on a Sunday afternoon that we would drive into Chicago to try to get tickets to the show. When we got to the Regal, he tried to get tickets outside the theater. I stood there by myself while he walked around trying to find tickets. The Regal wasn’t in the best of neighborhoods, so I was scared out of my mind. I waited for what felt like forever. He finally came back and said that all of the scalpers thought he was a cop. He finally found a guy who he convinced that he wasn’t a cop. He had to show the guy his driver’s license and teacher ID, but we finally got tickets. I was in absolute heaven at the show, hearing my favorites (Black, Footsteps, Porch, Elderly Woman, Even Flow). I can remember standing in the aisle, eyes closed, singing along with Eddie.
Favorite album: My favorite album still has to be Ten. I was a young hormonal teenager when the album came out and the album covers a ton of emotions. I can still remember the day that I got the CD and opened up the CD booklet.
Favorite lyric: “I did what I had to do. If there was a reason, it was you.”
Favorite album art: Vs. I remember getting the album and staring at the cover wondering what the heck was going on with the cover. The cover is so bizarre and I am still fascinated by it to this day.
Twelve words on how the band has inspired you: I learned to not listen to those who constantly put me down.
Van Nuys, CA
The first time you saw PJ: October 6, 1991 @ Hollywood Palladium in Calif.
Total number of shows you've seen: 29 times (including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Las Vegas and Seattle)
Favorite live performance: Although they always put on an amazing show, July 9, 2006 at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. is the most special live performance for me, as it’s the last time I got to see the band with my mother (who was also a fan) before she passed away.
Favorite album: TEN
Favorite lyric: “I will hold the candle, till it burns up my arm I’ll keep takin’ punches, until their will grows tired Oh I will stare the sun down, until my eyes go blind Hey I won’t change direction, and I won’t change my mind”
Favorite album art: The cover of TEN because of the emotion contained in that group shot
Twelve words on how the band has inspired you: PJ’s fearless approach to music inspired me to always follow my heart
