I am from a small town in Mississippi. This song makes me imagine what it would be like if I were to meet my high school girlfriend again after all these years. We were together all through high school and a couple of years after. Five in total. Of course we were in love in the beginning and talked about our life together and where we would go after we got out of that small place. We were together so long people expected us to get married. That scared me because I was working at a pizza joint and she was a clerk in a grocery store. I knew if we got married I would never get out of that place plus I didn’t feel the same way toward her at 22 as I did at 17. I could not bear the thought of being trapped there so I broke it off with her and broke her heart too but that is what I had to do. I married someone else soon afterwards and we moved to Seattle in January of 91. We have been married for 20 years now and couldn’t be happier living here. Through the miracle of the internet I have made contact with her and we have had some friendly emails. She is still a clerk in the same grocery store. My life has changed so over time where as her life still seems the same as it was back then, I can’t imagine what it would have been like had I stayed with her . A small town predicts her fate, where as I choose to make my own choices for better or worse and feel like I have had a much fuller life (so far so good anyway). When I hear this song I can imagine that it is us meeting.
