What were all those dreams we shared
Those many years ago?
What were all those plans we made
Now left beside the road?
Behind us in the road
More than friends I always pledged
Cause friends they come and go
People change as does everything
I wanted to grow old
Just want to grow old
Slide on next to me
I’m just a human being
I will take the blame
Bust just the same
This is not me
You see
Believe
I’m better than this
Don’t leave me so cold
Or buried beneath the stones
I just want to hold on
And know I’m worth your love
Enough
I don’t think
There’s such a thing
It’s my fault, Now I been caught
A sickness in my bones
How it pains to leave you here
With the kids on your own
Just don’t let me go
Help me see myself
Cause I can no longer tell
Looking out from the inside of
The bottom of a well
I yell
It’s hell
But no one hears
Before I disappear
Whisper in my ear
Give me something to echo
In my unknown futures ear
My dear
The End
Comes near
I’m here
But not much longer

Deep shit..
"Black", "Indifference" and "Come Back" eat your heart out.
this song is so fucking special. listen 5 times on youtube with the lyrics up from whynotsweden at the same time and if you dont want to cry there is something wrong with you.
All I can say is...Bravo.
mastepiece
Listening to it now.
eh
this song is a masterpiece. made me cry instantly. PJ are back with another fine evolution of music. im just thankful their music is the backing soundtrack of my life.
Wow. That's heavy. Crazy ending to the record, and to the song. Just ends....
This Song is absolutely a masterpiece. Fuck what a great song
wow! clearly one of pearl jam's best songs. incredibly powerful lyrics
What an ending to that album, the music drops, Ed utters the last line and then silence for six seconds. The End. Amazing, amazing finale.
You people are driving me crazy in a good way. I know all the songs are out there on u-tube, and stuff. But I make my-self waite for the physical CD to show up in my mail box. Get a nice big bottle of burgendy wine, and burgendy packeged smokes....Then go through the songs one by one, and hear them for the first time that way.
But it's fun reading all your reviews, like ("Eat your hart out Black, Indifference, and Come Back") So hey, GIVEN TO FLY 7. I, like everyone is so excited when a new PJ album comes out. But you are making me real excited about this album with comments like that.
I HAVE CHILLS...... THE WHOLE ALBUM IS MAGIC - I TOO WAITED TO HAVE THE WHOLE ALBUM IN ITS ENTIRETY..... WOW, LISTEN #2 COMING UP IMMEDIATELY!
PJ- HOW YOU KEEP THIS UP I HAVE NO IDEA- IT ASTOUNDS ME!
TOOO MANY FAVOURITE MOMENTS TO MENTION, BUT BRING ON THE AUSSIE TOUR.... AHHH, MUCH LOVE INDEED! XO
It's so apparent that instantly this song has touched so many. It is beautiful no question...in so many ways. But I can't even begin to attempt to convey how closely this song resonates with where my life is at this exact point in time. Chilling is definitely how I would describe it. This entire album is outstanding. Enough said.
MrFadedGlory I can relate 100 % to what you're saying and with every time I listen to the song I love it more and more...Like I mentioned before its a MASTERPIECE !
This song is amazing, especially after you know the lyrics.
To be able to capture the thought of someone facing death in this one is very powerful.
Felt the same thing with "Come Back"
Stop posting inaccurate lyrics WhyNotSweden
The lyrics on this album are as good as they get. Don't get me wrong I love the majority of their songs but these lyrics are intense.
Hey..name me one band other than PJ that is better 18 years later!!!!!! There isn't any!!!!! Thanks for all the music guys..never ever stop!!!!!! Can't wait for the Boston shows.
O..M..G...so beautiful.
It cuts right into your heart..
"Leavin' on a Jet Plane '09" Just sayin'.
Just speechless /bow to PJ.
Thanks for another amazing album
Hmmm. Sorry, but I'm obviously missing something. Ed's writing has only gotten cheesier over the last few albums, and to compare something like this to "Black" and "Indifference"? People's standards are dropping, it seems...
I have lost family and friends to cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and leukemia all in the last couple of years, and between this song and "Comeback" and in a way "Thumbing My way"... I feel like I'm not alone. Ed's lyrics are just unmatched. nz_spanna... to not feel the power of this song means something's missing on the inside for you my friend... This isn't like "Black" however... that is a simple love song of heartache, and heartbreak... it's maybe the best song I've ever heard, but it's an emotion we've all felt. Until you've sat holding your mother's hand in the hospital waiting for her to die, or had to ID your best friend's body after a car accident maybe you will understand the depths of the soul, and that love is more than the lost chance... it's that GOODBYE you never get to say... the pain that is so real that it lasts forever... it doesn't fade into a new love... it just is a part of you for the rest of your life. Maybe it's best that you don't get this song? It means you've probably never felt this kind of loss.
My fiance and I sat on our couch and listened to the full album front to back on the evening of Sunday, September 20th with the lyric book in front of us and when Just Breathe came on and we read along with the lyrics, both of our eyes filled up with tears. After the album was done, we put it back to track 5 and slow danced together and never felt so connected as we did at that moment. Right then and there we both decided it would be our wedding song. Just Breathe and enjoy the moments you have together. Thanks Eddie. This song speaks volumes.
Expression451 I just wanted to say that you just took the words out of my mouth...thank you! This song in particular is very close to me and very close to what is going on in my life. The lyrics on this album are just amazing! They are different from TEN, NO CODE, VITALOGY etc...they are what PEARL JAM is right now, where they are in their lives and the words are as beautiful as always...THANK YOU PJ I love you for all you do!
Masterpiece indeed. This is such an emotional song and the way Eddie sings it, just cuts right into your heart. He sang it live at the recent San Diego concert (10/9/09) and the whole crowd was silent. We were all in awe of the beauty of this song and what it meant individually to each of us. Eddie sings this with such intenstity. I cannot wait for the San Diego bootleg to come out so I can re-live that experience over and over!
nz_spanna just because Eddie's lyrics are more direct now, than they were in the early years. It doesn't mean the lyrics are cheesy. This albums lyrics are right up there with the lyrics from "Ten". Bacckspacer kicks ass both lyrics and music.
This was instantly my favorite song off the new album... and then a month later, my dad suddenly passed away after a brief illness. I've never been affected by a song like this- I cry every time I hear it now. Pearl Jam has always meant the world to me and now they just mean more. Thank you, Eddie, for this beautifully, heartbreaking song.
I'm sorry to hear about your father JR... Pj's music is good for the soul.
I cried when I heard this song for the first time, It's awesome!!
