Simply amazing.
I was privledged to witness this incredible gig. Was hyped for months leading into it and the boys did not disappoint again. Crappy venue sound wise but somehow PJ still managed to blow everyone away. Porch was sensational along with Present Tense and Corduroy.
Can't stop playing the bootleg, I get tingles each time I listen even after four months.
All I can say is thank you. Three years b/n gigs is hard work, but will take quality over quantity every time!
awesome band, awesome crowd, awesome show. i got tickets for my mate and myself through 10c. we went in early and my mate couldn't believe we were standing 20 meters away nearly directly in front. stoked that they played oceans and when they played 4 in a row from ten in the first encore in was insane it was what pj fans came to see. would have loved to hear i got shit or crazy mary but you can't win em' all, was awesome even without them.
Wish I`ve had been there. All through 18 years of band history this was one of the best shows I`ve ever heard.
In opposite to some of you my fav Backspacer song is "Force to nature" and not "Unknown Thoughts". :-)) But so what. Crowd made this one special, you seem to have been really great.
But dear Ed, if you read this, please do me a favour and stop sing older songs an octave higher than they use to be sang. 'Present Tense' f.i. Just keep it nice and easy please, just my personal view: PT loses its meaning to me when its vocals are that high and freaky. Let us fans scream out this one, but please don`t scream it yourselve.
I have to say that they are like a great bottle of red they only get better with time. Even now i can take a moment a work and close my eyes and see and here it all, still making me well up, still leaving me wanting more.
As usual, left me wanting more. 2.5 hours of absolute enjoyment. 3.5 if you include Ben Harper. Was in the third row in front of Stone. The Guys really looked like they enjoyed themselves on the night. It was great being at the front with the Fan Club members who really enjoyed the show and we all respected each other's space... I want to see them again and soon... Waiting to see where their next tour is, definitely going to think about Overseas travel to see them... Maybe Hawaii!!
Another tour, another Melbourne crowd blown away. Another long wait for the next one. As for the set list debators, hey, "I'll ride the wave where it takes me" - it's Pearl Jam - there ain't no bad sets.
Hats off to every one who played in Melbourne it was unreal...Mike stole the show with his guitar work and interaction with the croud. I met lots of new people and had a ball come back soon....Eddie i still love you the best lol but Mike i think you now second favorite...was really hoping to get to meeet you this time so i could get my tattoo signed but maygbe next time xoxox
I was listening to Backspacer during my flight to Melbourne and found myself not really getting into it, save for one or two songs, "Fixer" and "Just Breathe" in particular, but looking forward to seeing PJ for the third time, and at a new venue. Tenclub members tickets were collected on Friday and a mad dash back to the motel for a quick change and back to Etihad to join the earlybird entry line of about 1500 people when I tacked on the end, with another 500 or so behind me in a matter of minutes. Walking into the stadium was quite surreal as I had seen AFL played here and a rugby league match, the stadium felt different from ground level, the atmosphere was not quite "electric" but more subdued, the crowd waiting patiently with a nervous energy hanging in the air, like a bunch of little kids waiting to see Santa for the very first time. Positioned about 20 metres from the stage in "Fixer Field", I waited and chatted idly to friends, eyes flitting to the stage at any sign of movement in the area. Liam Finn warmed the crowd with an amazing energy and his use of "looping" instruments was nothing short of genius as he unleashed his music upon us and left nothing in the bank when he departed just 30 minutes later. Ben Harper and the Relentless 7 lit up the stadium for around 50 minutes, with a perfect setlist, highlighted by the duet with EV of the Queen/Bowie classic, "Under Pressure" and Harper's prowess on the slide guitar. Then PJ hit the stage. beginning with "Elderly Woman" was a masterstroke, (my tip was "Corduroy" which came second) and set up the remainder of the night. With an unbridled energy typical of PJ, EV and the lads blew the roof off Etihad. Vedder's ability to belt out a song then turn up the house lights and check if the crowd was doing ok, is amazing, while the other guys put everything they had into every note non stop for the first 80 odd minutes and we, the fans, bounced, banged, rocked and sang every word with them, especially with "Richo's" song, "Given to Fly" and a rare live performance of "Oceans", an absolute treat for all in attendance. The first encore was a powerful set on it's own with a Neil Young cover followed by the incredible new song "Just Breathe". Also, featuring an appearance from Ben Harper and four in a row from "TEN". Again they vacated the stage and we were left sweat soaked and wanting more. Encore 2 kicked off with Liam Finn joining EV for the Hunters' classic and included a couple of gems with "Baba O'Riley" and "Spin the Black Circle" alongside "TEN" classics "Black" and Alive", finishing with the house lights up and a memorable rendition of "Yellow Ledbetter" to end the night. So they didn't play "Betterman", does that really matter? I thought the setlist was perfect and filled with many highlights that I felt privileged to have been witness to. On my flight home, I settled into "Backspacer" again, finding a new sense of joy from the latest offering from PJ after hearing it live, it kind of made more sense. I will be back to see PJ next time they grace our shores, whatever venue they choose to play. Santa arrived early for this "little kid".
Wow!! What an amazing experience, 1st time seeing the guys and with fixer GA tickets we got pretty close and i was waiting with anticipation on what they would play and how good they would be and as soon as ed said 1,2,3...4,2,3 i knew it was gonna be something else! standing with my girlfriend and them opening with her favourite song was great, she went nuts and the set list to follow was just incredible! loved hearing brother and oceans and i've never seen a band play so solidly for over an hour before a break! highlights would have to be the big 4 from ten together, when they played jeremy then deep i said to my mate why not just keep going and play why go then porch and hey, my wish came true! the other big highlight was of course the massive ending of baba o'reilly and then my favourite yellow ledbetter which was just perfect! an amazing night that i will never forget, can't wait for the bootleg so i can re-live it and can't wait for them to return and blow my mind again! Cheers!!
Where to start? Three days on and I'm still on a high from the greatest concert ever!
Firstly, thank you to all the 10 Club members. The 12 hour wait outside the stadium in 36 degree weather follwed by a dust and electrical storm made the experience a little more pleasant. Then once we entered the stadium where I expected it to be survival of the fittest and an absolute shit fight, was surprised by all of you that were so calm and polite. I made it to the barrier and wasn't even brushed up against by anyone throughout the entire show! What a great group of fans! Thank you.
What a massive opening...Elderly Women, it brought me to tears.
A highlight that just took me straight back to my teenage years, locked away in my bedroon listening to Pearl Jam, were the 4 tracks from Ten. Jeremy, Deep, Why Go and then Porch! It totally peaked during Deep & Why Go with the crowd rocking out old school style.
Indifference! A moment I will remember forever, which again had me in tears.
As some others have mentioned, I have to think twice before it hits me that they did actually play Oceans!
And Mike McCreedy, what a fucking rock star!
It was so good to see Ed, Jeff, Mike, Stone & Matt just loving being there with us.
Someone on here mentioned that they heard someone after the show say 'they didn't play Betterman, how disappointing'. I agree, how ungreatful. They didn't play my favourite either but they made up for it with playing all my other ones....and then some!
And what a way to go out! When Eddie jumped into the crowd, my heart stopped for a split second. I had said at the start of the night that I would bet Eddie was going to do it, no one believed me...I was right!
To add to the Rod Laver vs Etihad Stadium debate, I must say that if I had been in the stands I would have been heart broken. Pearl Jam have such a massive following in Australia that now spans 3 generations. Rod Laver give the crowd a much even level of viewing and sound quality, where as the stadium does not. I have seen them twice at Rod Laver in both the upper & lower levels and have been more than happy both times. In the stands at the stadium you are too far back and the sound can be delayed, which must have been so disappointing for many people. It could also explain why I couldn't see anyone rocking out in the stands! Most people remained seated.
Hopefully they will return to Rod Laver next time. I can't wait to take my son with us. As he is only 2, I figured he was a bit to young just yet.
Thank you so much to the band for an amazing night and all the years of music you have given us. I know that for me (and fans around the world), Pearl Jam mean so much to me. This experience is one that I will never get over and that very few people in my life can relate to, but I know that the fans on here get it!
Absolutely loved the show, what a setlist only the second time i have heard "spin" live ... how good was that , i love the presence they have on stage no other band does it for me quite the way PJ does. It was my 6th time live and i now cant wait for the 7th, but next time i would love to get back to rod laver, whilst Etihad was an awesome show, i miss the more personal show the first 2 shows at rod laver are always full of die hard going off thier heads fans. Ohh plus the fact i get to see you 2 or 3 times in a couple of days. Well done guys you never fail to deliver.
I was about 6-7 rows from the front barrier- we stood for around 6 1/2 hours - it was about 45 degrees in the mix - i perspired more than a normal person should - i had a mosher kick me in the back of the scone - and it was the most highlight full show i've seen them do live (in person or on dvd). There were covers with Ben Harper early in his set, Throw Your Arms Around Me with Liam Finn (and i'm a big Hunters and Collectors fan and used to see them live A LOT) and it was chilling, personal song sets, blow the roof off sets etc etc etc One thing i'd like to do is thank the organisation of the passing out of water constantly by security and looking after us so well in the mix - awesome job guys.
Cheers, Kieren
This was my third show i have been to and i can easily say the best of the lot.. even from all the bootlegs ive got, this was the standout. Perfect show and a perfect setlist. I've always wanted to hear Indifference live and thankfully i got it, was amazing, absoulutely beautiful. Eddie even said 'thank you mate' to me and my dad throughout the show. Stone gave us a big smile aswell. Thank you ten club for the tickets which got me and my dad 2nd row. And also a big thank you to the best band in the world. Ed, stone, matt, mike, jeff and boom. Thank you for the most amazing night of my life.
Are you the guy that was in the line up outside all day with me (I was the one that was on my own all day waiting for my husband and stressed out cos I didn't know if I could get him his ticket). Your dad was wearing the blue hat and drinks bundy.
When they played Indifference, I thought of you and looked around to find you guys but couldn't see over the crowd. Your dad told me how much it would have meant to you if they played it. I'm glad they did for you.
Enjoy Brissy!
Great show! My second experience of PJ. About 10 songs in i thought it was too good to be true. Oceans, Present Tense, Animal, Daughter, etc. It was great. I would have liked something off Binaural, but oh well. Someone after the show had the nerve to say "No Better man, WTF? I'm dissappointed" very very ungrateful.
Etihad isn't a great venue for gigs, hence there are only 2-3 there a year, but Pearl Jam made it special! Thank you!
It's been a couple of days now so I thought I'd better check this page just to make sure that they did actually play oceans and that I didn't just dream it up. Seems as if they did really play it... or maybe I'm still dreaming.
Thank you to Eddie and his brothers. Awesome performance! Took a few friends who did not know what to expect, everyone left in awe. Words cant describe the experience but as one of my mates asked on the way out- "and they do that for every show?". I just smiled. Enjoy your down time, love it when you are on!
I have seen the band 8 times now, including the last show of 3 in Seattle in 2000 - this was the best. The first 30 mins were like a lightning bolt! Mike doing laps of the stage during the last few songs was great, and Matt drumming and singing, what a legend. Ed, Stone & Jeff going for it all night.
The fact that Ed stopped, turned the lights up and asked if we were all ok just shows how great a man he really is. Respect to the greatest band on earth
I can't believe how the guys just continue to get better and better! This was the 5th time i've seen them and I couldn't have written a better set list myself!! The energy that they show on stage after all these years still hasn't wavered. Ed engages the crowd as good as ever. And the passion from Stone, Mike, Jeff and Matt gives me chills! I love that Boom gets a big showing now too, the songs do benefit from having keys there.
I went in hoping for a sample off Ten and Vs. But to get so many was just phenomenal! I didn't dare even hope for Black or Oceans but then there they were! Ben Harper joining on stage for Red Mosquito and Indifference were also highlights. And my first time hearing Brother live too.
On the venue. Was a great show, especially considering the size of the place. It wasn't just the nose bleeds with people not joining in though. We had Ten Club tix and there were people near us who weren't even singing along to Jeremy or Alive (and giving me dirty looks for completely rocking out). Would have been nice if Ten Club got own sectioned area so we could go off without the MMM crowd who just didn't get it.
Hoping that we get a bootleg for this one soon! As I plan to relive the show over and over and over! Pearl Jam you have done it again. Can't wait for the next tour!!
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC SHOW. Excellent Setlist, we were hoping for a Neil Young song and got it. The sound quality was the best I've experienced in such a show. Thanks PJ for another truly memorable experience; You are a CLASS ACT...and thanks for the water, it was fuckn' hot (I stuck to beer though). See you next time. Get ready Sydney, you're in for a great night.
Quote: "Nothing compares to one of their shows. Nothing compares to the senstation, expectation leading in.
Tonight I cant help but think, as part of that warm reflection afterglow, in that blissed/blessed time after a PJ show, how have they have been able to keep it together, musically, mentally, physically etc, then remain capable of new material & a live show that produces perfect rock posture, emotive eloquence, quiet strength, deluxe guitar/drum dirge & dirt, all the while appearing to do it without pretense, but with vigour and a positive motivation. Combine all the ingredients, sprinkle in the PJ majick dust, and you end up with a show that has that indefinable, unique (and all too transient) ability to take you 'there'....."
WOW! You summed up exactly what I feel, but was never able to put into words. BRAVO!!!
in the lower section, about 3/4 of the way down the oval.
Yeah agreed it was little hard to connect but overall PJ did a great job of getting across such a large venue. My concern, and this a recent crowd observation of a few other gigs too,was the complaining about people standing and rocking out! got told to sit down numerous times, and considering the heavier nature of the set list,I just don't get?I's a fucking rock concert! My guess a big MMM contingency had shown up!
Apart from that brilliant set!they are so tight, which they always have been,no Johnny Guitar and was praying they would do Down but can't win ew all haha
Greatest show I've ever seen them perform.
Total departure from the intimate nature of the previous show. The night was all about rocking the fark out.
Very loud set and enthusiastic crowd.
The needle & the damage done was quite a moment.
Amazing as always, being the forth time iv seen them i knew what to expect but this was the first time i really got to get up close to the band as all previous shows i attended in Melbourne were all seated so it was great to finally get that chance. Also cool to see them at a different venue this time for a different atmosphere.
Support from Liam Finn and Ben Harper was very entertaining, both talented musicians and good to see them get up and do a few songs with Pearl Jam.
The thing I love is I still heard a bunch of songs never played at the other gigs:Oceans,Deep,Indifference (with Ben Harper),Red Mosquito (also with Harper),Present Tense plus the new songs of course.Still I thought the highlight was when they tore up the crowd with 4 songs from 'Ten' in a row with Jeremy,Deep,Why Go and Porch. That album is timeless and still kill it live.Other highlight was my favorite song Black during the encore, beautiful song and really captures the entire crowd.
They can never play everything you wanna hear but thats the beauty of seeing them time and time again its always something different and always worth it.
Hard to decide my favorite out of all the shows over the years but all have their own special place.
Hi, also my forth time seeing PJ, loved it as always but felt like i was a million miles away as had to take reserved seating as my beautiful sister is not well & couldnt stand in the fixer section. so for me the stadium was too big , I couldnt hear Ed talking & i was the only one in our section who got up to dance/jump around etc.. every one stayed seated?? it felt really weird,, feel as though i'm in mourning today as know i wont be seeing them again for awhile & hope next time they'll play back at Rod Laver & i'll definetly try & be up the front.
after seeing the band last night, and each year of previous melbourne visits/tours, its fair to say there will be some discussion on the personal preferances of laver/etihad in Melbourne.EG: We had 10 club tix, however unlike laver, there was no advantage at etihad due to GA status of fixer field. As mentioned from intersate shows comments, it depends on your effort to weave the crowd as to how good your view will be. Like most things both arenas have their advantages and disadvantages. Etihad was LOUD, but had a clean enough sound where we were on the fixer, ie, louder and heavier than any laver show = GOOD, DAMN GOOD!! The sense of atmosphere was awesome on the field, but during bar trips, i couldnt help but notice large sections of the seated crowd not appearing to have that 'contact' to the band. Something that Laver has the advantage on by far.
Having said that, with the scale of the crowd and conditions at etihad, PJ did a masterfull job of getting an arena show to reach as many people as possible, and i suspect it would be exremeley difficult for any other performance/performer to do it any better.
Heaps of highlights, including all those already mentioned here, i will put a quick line re Stone.
All Stone fans attending next shows: Stone is on fire! He has long hair AKA 1993, and he is amped.I cant recall any other show i've seen where he was on the move so much!
Have always loved the way Stone prowls his end of the stage, subtle, infused, alight within the music. The neck movements, the shuffle, love the Stone!
But during the melbourne show he traded off with everyone & was cleanly ripping into every song.
Towards the end of show, he was playing on his knees as Mikes feet, on Mikes side of stage, it appeared almost like in homage to Mike, quite a site.
The band all took their customary positions on stage, the energy was high and consistant for the entire show.
Nothing compares to one of their shows. Nothing compares to the senstation, expectation leading in.
"what will they play first?"
"will it be a slow or fast start?"
"will they play much off Ten?" (during the 4 in a row, we were in raptures, mindfull of the experience/opportunity and transfixed)
Combine all the ingredients, sprinkle in the PJ majick dust, and you end up with a show that has that indefinable, unique (and all too transient) ability to take you 'there'.....
And they do that? For you and all.....enjoy your time together
Totally agree with ya on the crowd in the upper levels ( well 90% of em), As i took my 10yr old son didnt want to subject him to The Fixer section so took Level 2 seating and felt was too far away (although would be great to watch the footy from there, which is what the place was built for anyway), so moved to lower level and felt closer to it and a bit more crowd involvement, All in all was awesome goin back to the old days with an almost entirley 10 concert ( outta all that still missed seein Release, maybe next time )

Aaaargh. No back order available either- goes to show how highly regarded the Melbourne fans thought of the guys' performance.

Bring on brisbane!
Get ready Sydney, you're in for a great night.
hopefully similar set list for sydney
does anyone know how long it takes before you can order the cd for melbourne 2009? and how you go about it.?
OK, so I'm not going to say I was disappointed with the setlist (6 new songs and my first Brother!!), but what happened to the last three albums?
only Green Disease from Riot Act and nothing from PJ or Binaural :o(
Indifference with Ben Harper was the stand out for me. oh, and being able to touch EV!
I touched him too!
Can't wait for this outdoor event, all other times have been indoors, I guess a whole new dimension of pure rock and roll, ready to
'Get Some'
Quote: "Nothing compares to one of their shows.
BRAVO!!!
Oceans, Deep, Present Tense, Brother, Enough said. Wanted hold on but the replacment was gold!
what more can i say....AMAZING!
in the lower section, about 3/4 of the way down the oval.
Apart from that brilliant set!they are so tight, which they always have been,no Johnny Guitar and was praying they would do Down but can't win ew all haha
quality show from quality men.
Greatest show I've ever seen them perform.
Total departure from the intimate nature of the previous show. The night was all about rocking the fark out.
Very loud set and enthusiastic crowd.
The needle & the damage done was quite a moment.
Best Show I've Seen!!
Best concert ever!
